“When I jumped, my parachute failed to open,” William Gore wrote to his parents in Lewistown, Montana. “As I fell through space I suddenly went through the top of a captain’s parachute. His parachute then collapsed and we both headed for the ground.”

Gore’s parachute finally opened just above the ground, slowing them both enough to land unhurt in a rice paddy, which absorbed much of the impact.
